Global Tuberculosis Control 2009 Epidemiology, Strategy, Financing

WHO PRESS

2009, 303 pages [English]

ISBN 978 92 4 156380 2

This report is WHO’s thirteenth annual report on global tuberculosis control in a series that started in 1997. The report presents WHO’s latest assessment of the epidemiological burden of TB (numbers of cases and deaths), as well as

progress towards the 2015 targets for global TB control that have been established within the context of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). It also includes a thorough analysis of implementation and financing of the WHO’s Stop TB Strategy and the Stop TB Partnership’s Global Plan to Stop TB, since in combination these have set out how TB control needs to be implemented and funded to achieve the 2015 targets. The report gives particular attention to the period 2006–2009, but selected epidemiological, implementation and financial data are presented for previous years as well. This includes epidemiological data back to 1990 and financial data back to 2002. Bringing together data reported by 196 out of 212 countries and territories in 2008, as well as data collected from these countries and territories in previous years, Global tuberculosis control 2009 is the definitive source of information about the national and international response to the worldwide TB epidemic.

The World Cancer Report 2008 . Edited by P. Boyle and B. Levin.

International Agency for Research on Cancer

2008, 510 pages [English]

ISBN 978 92 832 0423 7

The World Cancer Report 2008 provides a unique global view of cancer and documents many important features of the global situation. The global cancer burden doubled in the last thirty years of the twentieth century, and it is estimated that this will double again between 2000 and 2020 and nearly triple by 2030. Until recently, cancer was considered a disease of westernised, industrialised countries. Today the situation has changed dramatically, with the majority of the global cancer burden now found in low- and medium-resource countries. The greatest impact of this coming increase will fall on the low- and medium-resource countries, which frequently have a limited health budget and a high background level of communicable disease. Cancer treatment facilities are not universally available and life-saving therapies are frequently unavailable.

Mental Health Aspects of Women’s Reproductive Health. A Global Review of the Literature. Edited by Jane Fisher, Jill Astbury, Meena Cabral de Mello and Shekhar Saxena

2008, 170 pages [E]

ISBN 978 92 156356 7

WHO in collaboration with the Key Centre for Women’s Health in Society, WHO Collaborating Centre in Women’s Health at the School of Population Health, University of Melbourne, and UNFPA developed a Global Review on the Mental Health Aspects of Women’s Reproductive Health. The Review responds to a prime concern women around the world have expressed that the mental health implications of certain reproductive events/problems are huge and compromise in multiple ways their health and their wellbeing - but that in most countries mental health as a component of reproductive health services remains inconspicuous, peripheral and marginal. Furthermore, this lack of attention is unfortunate, given the significant contribution both mental health and reproductive health make to the global burden of disease and disability. This Review is a unique document containing all available evidence regarding the relationship between women’s mental health and selected aspects of their reproductive health. It includes a discussion of the

biopsychosocial factors that create vulnerability to poor mental health and those that might be protective and the types of programmes that could mitigate adverse effects and promote mental health. The document is based on research on these subjects over the last 15 years from high, middle and low-income countries. Evidence from peer-reviewed journals has been used wherever possible but has been augmented with results of a specific survey initiated to gather state of the art information on reproductive and mental health issues from a variety of potential researchers and interested parties. Valuable data from consultant reports, national programme evaluations and postgraduate research work was also compiled, analyzed and synthesized.

International Travel and Health 2009. Situation as on 1 January 2009

2008, 236 pages [E]

ISBN 978 92 4 158042 7

More than 900 million international journeys were undertaken in 2008. This amount of global travel exposes many people to changes in altitude, humidity, disease agents and temperature - all of which can lead to illhealth. Many health risks can be minimized by precautions taken before, during and after travel. This book explains how travellers can stay healthy, and provides WHO guidance on vaccinations, malaria chemoprophylaxis and treatment, protection against insects and other disease vectors, and safety in different environmental settings. This book covers all the main health risks to travellers, both during their journey and at the destinations. It describes the relevant infectious diseases, including causative agents, modes of transmission, clinical features, geographical distribution and prophylactic and preventive measures. New and revised contents in this edition include: a new chapter on psychological health; a country list with updated malaria and yellow fever information; a revised section on rabies more precise; and updated maps. This book is designed for medical and public health professionals who advise travellers, but it is also a standard reference for travel agents, airlines, shipping companies and travellers themselves.
